How do I get a real deep “thump” out of my bass drum?

I have a Pearl export series drum kit with Evans (I think) heads, but my bass drum sounds like crap. How can I get a real thump out of it, like heavy hard rock bass beat, if you know what I mean? The bass head is quite old I think, so does the sound have more to do with the head, or with the beater. I currently have a felt beater.

I have a Tama Imperialstar kit with an Evans EMAD 2 head. When I first started using this set I found the Bass drum had a very slow decay. What this means is that when my beater hit the head, the sound would hold for a few seconds, and the sound itself was lacking the thud I desired. In short, whenever I played the bass drums slow decay would mess up the swiftness and attack of my beats, which was a real pain. To give the bass drum more attack and thump, I muffled it internally with some spare foam I had lying around in my basement. Pilows, blankets and even laundry will have the same effect in cutting the resonance of your base drum and will also give it a quicker attack. Drumheads are pretty important as wel, you want to make sure you get one that is right for your style, rock. I play in a hard Rock Band and like I said before, I love the EMAD 2 head. However, Remo also makes some great products, such as the ambassador series, that you might like to sample. The beater doesn’t matter as much but perhaps purchasing a nylon beater would give you a cleaner sound. I have a single chain drive bass pedal, so if yours is a double chain you will be getting more power which will amplify your sound more.
